Clearwell Circle:
This is a moderately difficult walk, taking in a couple of steepish but not too long hills. The going is fairly dry on good and quiet country lanes and footpaths with lots of stiles and some muddy spots. You will need your walking boots for this one and long trousers are recommended! This fabulous walk takes in ancient woodlands, honeycombed with iron-ore scowles and caves and as we go deeper into the wood, we enter a magical area of moss-covered rocks, twisted trees and mysterious hollows. Once through the woods, the walk opens up onto fields giving wonderful views across the Wye valley to the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains. We continue along an old Burial Path into the village of Newland with its Cathedral of the Forest Church, notable for its stunning stained glass windows. Near the end of the walk, after passing through cornfields with wonderful views of the River Wye, we bypass a neo-Gothic castle and head back into the village of
Clearwell.
Clement's End Woodland Walk:
A gentle walk through a former mining area in the high forest which is now predominantly broadleaf woodland (chestnut, beech, larch and oak). This pretty area of the forest is home to numerous foxes, rabbits, squirrels and to a variety of birds as well as woodland flowers and makes a perfect
morning stroll.
